Infestations can spread quickly, especially in cold weather when birds are in close contact. Northern fowl mites spend their entire life cycle on birds, while red chicken mites primarily feed at night and hide in nesting areas during the day. Without proper control, these parasites can cause significant discomfort and weaken birds over time.

Signs of Infestation

Rough, scaly feathers

Dark stains around the vent due to mite eggs, scabs, and feces

Reduced egg production

Reduced weight gains

Mites are often more prevalent in roosters than in hens. Checking for mites at night, when they return to the birds, is the most effective way to detect infestations.

Prevention Strategies

Clean and disinfect coops before introducing new birds.

Inspect new birds for mites before adding them to the flock.

Prevent mite spread by maintaining biosecurity—keep rodents and wild birds away.

Use washable egg flats and steam-clean equipment when moving items between flocks.

Regular monitoring and early treatment are key to protecting birds from mites and minimizing their impact on flock health.

Treatment

Consult your vet for the best treatment options tailored to your flock.
